Spherical Ball Joint Burnishing Using a Conventional Lathe
In the manufacturing processes for high-precision spherical ball joints, burnishing is typically associated with specific machinery and tools designed exclusively for this type of operation.
At INTEGI, we have validated a new application for our standard burnising tool ref. HBU, successfully burnishing a spherical ball joint with optimal results using:
- Standard roller burnishing tool ref. HBU
- Burnishing rollers designed and manufactured by INTEGI
- Test done on a MORI SEIKI NLX CNC lathe
It is not required the use of a specialized machinery.
The test was conducted using F125 (42CrMo4) material, which is widely used in automotive applications and in components subjected to high dynamic loads.
During the process, the roller exerts controlled pressure on the spherical surface while the part rotates on the lathe, causing cold deformation that allows for:
- Significantly reducing surface roughness
- Compacting the surface and eliminating micro-irregularities
- Improve the part’s fatigue resistance
- Achieve high-precision spherical geometry
Operating parameters used:
- Vc = 200 m/min
- Feed rate = 0.025 mm/revolution
- Roller penetration = 0.5 mm
- Spring compression = Position 2 (160 N)
This development opens up new possibilities for manufacturers and machine shops, enabling the integration of high-quality spherical burnishing operations using standard machinery already available on the shop floor.
