Existen dos tipos principales de moletreadores: los que operan por deformación (las estrías se forman mediante la aplicación de presión sobre la pieza mientras gira) y los que lo hacen por corte (las estrías se generan gracias a la posición inclinada de la moleta, la cual corta el material mientras la pieza gira.).
