Basics of form-knurling

Form knurling:

It is produced cold-forming the material through the pressure of the knurls against the workpiece. A certain increase in the diameter of the workpiece is attained. Aproximate relationship between diameters is indicated in the following chart:

There are two ways to perform form-knurling:

-Radially, when the width of the strip to be knurled matches that of the knurl.
-Traversely, when the width of the strip to be knurled exceeds that of the knurl. For this case, the knurl must be bevelled.

 

DIN 82 norm rules the different knurl patters that can be done. Any of them can be performed either way using one, two or three knurls, but RGV and RKV; which we recommend to be radially fed.

 

When working with a form-knurling tool several knurling patterns can be achieved depending on how many knurls are used and their teeth pattern.
